Attention, all you unsung heroes of the dialysis world! Get ready to bask in the spotlight, because it's National Dialysis Technician Recognition Week, and the moment is finally yours!

From October 14th to 19th, 2024, we're pulling out all the stops to celebrate the incredible work you do, day in and day out, to elevate patient care. As the backbone of the dialysis industry, your dedication, skill, and compassion are what keep our loved ones thriving, and it's high time you received the recognition you deserve.

So, get ready for a week of certificates, celebrations, and more! This is your chance to shine, to be lauded for the life-changing impact you have on the lives of your patients. Your tireless efforts, your unwavering commitment, and your unwavering spirit are what make you the true heroes of the dialysis community.

Dialysis technicians, the moment is now – let's make it count!

NANT has ways that your dialysis organization can easily recognize your technicians, alert everyone who enters your clinic/unit that you are celebrating this important week and gives patients a way to recognize their technician.

Start by printing our full color 17 x 11” poster to post in your entrance area and in your staff room. Take the time to download the “brag badge” below (just right click to copy) and add to your email signature to let everyone know in your organization that you are celebrating your dialysis technicians.

Set up a station in the patient waiting area for the patients to complete a certificate for their favorite clinical technician. Print the patient recognition certificates, add colored markers, and then either have the patients give it to their technicians immediately, or collect them all to give to your technicians during a special recognition event at the end of the week.

Joint Position Statement

Joint Position Statement of the
National Association of Nephrology Technicians/Technologists (NANT)
American Nephrology Nurses’ Association (ANNA)
and the
on Dialysis Technicians/Technologists

Background and Rationale

The ultimate goal of the nursing process is to effect positive patient outcomes in the most cost-effective way.

ANNA and NANT recognize that the achievement of favorable patient outcomes is a collaborative effort between all members of the interdisciplinary team.

ANNA and NANT further acknowledge that dialysis patient care technicians* (PCTs*) deliver the majority of direct care in most chronic dialysis facilities. PCTs* perform specific direct patient care activities and function under the direction and oversight of the registered nurse. Dialysis technicians and technologists work under a defined scope of practice, in the practice setting of a dialysis facility, and any licensure or certification requirements in effect in the state in which they are employed. Additional specific facility/agency policies and procedures in congruence with State Nurse Practice Acts related to delegation may also apply. (Refer to ANNA’s Position Statement “Delegation of Nursing Care Activities.”)

ANNA supports the collaborative role of Registered Nurses (RNs) with members of the interdisciplinary team in the provision of care to individuals undergoing dialysis therapy for chronic kidney failure. ANNA believes the overall accountability and responsibility for nursing care rendered to patients and the coordination of patient care activities is the responsibility of RNs with experience in nephrology nursing who, by basic nursing education and state practice regulations, are designated to provide dialysis assessments and interventions.

ANNA and NANT support:

  • Additional research to determine the appropriate skill mix of personnel and staffing patterns.
  • The development of a standard national program of education and training for dialysis patient care technicians, preferably in a formal setting.
  • The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Conditions for Coverage for End Stage Renal Disease Facilities mandate that technicians complete standardized training and competency testing and become certified within 18 months of the first date of training.
  • Annual continuing educational requirements.

ANNA and NANT promote standards for education of all practitioners as a means to achieve quality of care, and both associations will work collaboratively at the state and Federal levels to achieve these goals.

ANNA and NANT agree that the term “certification” should be reserved for private-sector programs that attest to the competency of individual health professionals. Both associations strongly urge registered nurses and dialysis technicians/technologists to pursue certification by a nationally recognized testing organization as soon as eligible.

Volunteering

NANT is a member of the renal community's ongoing efforts to match dialysis professionals willing to serve in times of natural disasters with organizations who need volunteers.

Kidney Community Emergency Response Coalition

The Kidney Community Emergency Response Coalition is compiling a list of individuals who are interested in assisting in the event of a future emergency or disaster. This list will serve as a means to quickly identify volunteers.

Registering as a volunteer does not necessarily mean that you will be called for every disaster that occurs. People will be called as needed. Please note that volunteers will be responsible for their own transportation to the disaster area.

Click here to provide the requested information and take the first step to be a volunteer of this emergency preparedness network. ANNA is coordinating these efforts for nurses and hemodialysis technicians.

An Emergency Hotline is available for dialysis units to contact in the event of a disaster or emergency. The number is 888.335.4363 (888.33KIDNEY).

Bridge of Life (BoL) Medical Mission to Haiti

Recent Jerry Woods Excellence in Dialysis scholar Lisa Marie Walker has been selected to volunteer on a Bridge of Life Medical Mission to Haiti.

walker

"I am honored to be volunteering on a Bridge of Life (BOL) medical mission to Haiti. As a volunteer, my goal is to raise at least $1,000 by the mission start date on June 4, 2016. By making a contribution in honor of my mission work, you will help me provide primary care and/or chronic kidney disease screenings to families in nearby villages who currently have difficulties accessing treatment due to poor roads and lack of transportation."

To learn more about the Bridge of Life program or to make a contribution to Lisa Marie's mission, please visit the 2016 Haiti Primary Care Mission page
